You Had Me at Chick Flicks: A Girl's Movie Night In

As much as I am ready for Spring, it's still full on Winter here in Minnesota. We are expected to get several more inches of snow today! When it's cold and snowy, I love curling up to watch movies. For several years, my friends and I have had monthly girls nights. It may not seems like the prime months, but I've always signed up for a Winter month and had fun hosting everything from a pajama party to a plaid party.

This year, I thought, what would be better than some comfy clothes and some of our favorite Chick Flicks? When I had the idea stewing, I reach out to one of my favorite party printable designers, Alison of Just Add Confetti. We had so much fun collaborating on an Adam Sandler-inspired Thanksgiving Leftover Bar last year that I knew she'd be the perfect person to work with on this party! With a color scheme of copper and marble, we let the creativity flow.

To start, I setup a folding table near our comfy sectional and TV. I added on a white table cloth that I picked up at Target. White is one of those colors worth investing in, as you can use it over and over! Next, I added on a marbled runner made with wrapping paper. After Christmas, I went on a little binge of buying clearance wrapping paper that I could use for tables or other creative projects throughout the year. I used another roll for a recent Girl Scout Cookie and Wine Pairing Party. It's such a cheap way to add some festive flair to your party. However, if you don't already have marble wrapping paper, you could also use a roll of marble contact paper. No need to peel back the adhesive. Just roll across the table and cut to your desired length.

This is where Alison's talents come in! She created a wonderful set of coordinating printables that you can get for FREE on her blog, Just Add Confetti! I had the backdrop printed at Costco on posterboard so it was sturdy enough to stand on its own. An even cheaper option is just poster paper. The size pictured here is 16x20 and you can also order through places like Walgreens, Walmart, or CVS. Just plan ahead, as some places don't do this sizing same day.

"Eat Your Feelings" Popcorn Bar

Now, what would be a movie night without a Popcorn Bar? I am a huge fan of popcorn! You can certainly keep it simple with popcorn picked up from the store, but when I met Heather of Hip Pop Popcorn at a local event, I knew it would be perfect for this party! She has so many wonderful flavors that it was hard to choose! I went with a classic, Cheese; something for the sweet tooth, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel; and something a little different, Garlic Truffle. All three were so delicious!! The great news is that she can ship anywhere!

To style the popcorn bar, I used copper metal baskets that I picked up at Walmart. While at Walmart, I grabbed a package of white lunch bags (50 for under $2) to put the popcorn in and put into the baskets. I cut the bags down and rolled them down a few times. I've got the full tutorial on my harvest hash post.

To create the labels, I picked up $.44 cent marble tiles at Home Depot. You can find these in the tile aisle. Using my Cricut, I cut out vinyl lettering and applied them onto the tiles. I added some copper washi tape from Oriental Trading Company to complete the look. If you don't have a fancy Cricut, you can use sticker lettering available at your local craft store or you can just write directly on the tiles!

To top off the popcorn bar, I added Alison's cute "Eat Your Feelings" printable! It really goes hand in hand with chick flicks! You can also grab some of the movies you have around and a few votives as an extra detail!

Calories Don't Count When It's Girl's Night In

Movie theater candy was also a must for the snack table! But, all of those randomly colorful boxes didn't go with the look! The wrapping paper came to the rescue again! Use wrapping paper or contact paper to cover the boxes, but leave the sides uncovered so guests can easily select the candy of their choice.

I picked up boxes for about $.88 cents a piece at Walmart, but Dollar Tree also sells a great selection of movie theater candy as well. To top them off, I added these cute labels from Just Add Confetti! Calories definitely don't count on girl's night!

I'm Not Crying, Your Crying

When I am hosting, I love giving out a little favor! These don't have to be anything expensive. For this party, Alison suggested giving out some Kleenexes for those tear jerkers! Can anyone say Nicholas Sparks movies? UGLY. CRY. I picked up a pack of travel-sized Kleenexes at Walmart for less than $3 and added these cute tags!

Chick Flick Games

Wine, snacks, and conversation is usually plenty to keep the ladies busy, but it's also fun to have a few activities! Check out "Chick Flick Bingo" and "Name that Movie!" The bingo card is filled with common plot points in chick flicks and the movie lines were collected from some of my personal favorites! To play the bingo, just print the cards and have your guests listen along to the movies and mark the spaces as things happen in the movies. I was the final judge on debating if a character’s action counted!

You'll also see some fun movie lines in signage around the party, too! Here are the answers to the movie lines featured on the Trivia game:

  1. Jerry Maguire

  2. Dirty Dancing

  3. Titanic

  4. The Notebook

  5. You've Got Mail

  6. When Harry Met Sally

  7. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

  8. Notting Hill

  9. The Wedding Date

  10. Love Actually

I used some thrifted copper pots and containers for the sharpies and game cards! You can often find these at places like Goodwill for just a few dollars and I've used them in everything from decor to other party setups. If you want to get Bingo official, Dollar Tree carries Bingo markers.
