Harvest Hash: A Delicious Treat for Fall
One of my husband-to-be's signature party dishes is his Chex Mix. We serve it at a lot of gatherings and it always gets eaten up quickly! Our 2016-2017 Girl's Night Out (better known as GNO) kicked off at the end of September and we were each tasked with bringing an appetizer to share. My mom was in town helping with wedding tasks and offered to make a recipe she'd seen online: Harvest Hash. It's a fall spin on Chex mix and is a nice mix of sweet and salty.
The original recipe suggested its own mix and did not include the original Chex mix seasoning, but you can make your own modifications like my mom did. Here is what she put in:
3 cups - Wheat Chex
3 cups - Rice Chex
3 cups - Bugles
3 cups - Cheez-Its
2+ cups - Candy Corn + Fall Candy Mix
2 cups - M&Ms (we took out the blue ones, since that didn't scream fall)
3 cups - Pretzel Squares
1 cup - Pumpkin Seeds
Here are the other ingredients you'll need:
8 T. - Stick Butter
1 T. - Seasoned Salt
1/4 + 1/8 tsp. - Garlic Powder
1 T. - Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp. - Hot Sauce (your choice)
Directions: Melt butter. Add garlic powder, salt, Worcestershire, and hot sauce. Stir. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl WITHOUT candy. Pour butter mixture over cereal mix. Toss. Spread evenly on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 hour. When finished, cool for 15 minutes. Add candy. Store in airtight container or bag.
You can certainly serve this up in a bowl, but that wouldn't be very crafty, now would it?! You can quickly whip up these little individual bags to serve them in and it will give your snack a little harvest flair. The idea for the bags came from a blog called The House of Hendrix .
What You Need
Lunch Sacks (Dollar Tree)
Ribbon (Dollar Tree)
Scissors
Step 1: Cut the lunch sack in half.
Step 2: Folder over the top of the lunch sack.
Step 3: Tie ribbon around it (any fall or Halloween ribbon will do).
Step 4: Use a measuring cup to divide up the Harvest Hash.
Step 5: Your snack is ready to be served!
This was a hit among my girlfriends. Our host was the lovely Lauren who was able to do our kickoff this year even though she and her husband are currently living in Ireland. We were so glad she was able to come back to the states for a few weeks! She is pictured below with her Harvest Hash! It was a bonus that the bags matched very well with her tablecloth.
